Did You Know?

Here are some things to consider when having cabinets and furniture built.

Types of joints
At Hanrahan and Sons we dovetail every drawer and mortise and tenon all doors to ensure maximum strength and longevity.

Dovetail (drawer joint) - the dovetail is still the best method of jointing two pieces of wood together along their width at right angles to each other.

Hand Rubbed Finishes
We use a three part Tung Oil based finish which is hand-rubbed on most of our furniture and cabinetry. We prefer this finish mainly because of the way it brings out the beauty of the wood but also because it is easily repaired or renewed.

Wood Movement
When building solid wood cabinets or furniture it is important to take into consideration the natural movement of the wood over time. Despite the fact that we use only kiln-dried lumber, there is still a considerable amount of movement that occurs in the wood with the changing seasons and the aging of the cabinets or furniture.
We design our products with wood movement in mind so that joints stay strong and so that there is no splitting or binding of the wood over time.
